Arkansas Delta’s Economic Heritage Summer Tour: Southern Tenant Farmers Museum

  • Southern Tenant Farmers Museum 117 S Main St Tyronza, AR United States (map)

Come find us in Tyronza for our fifth stop on the Arkansas Delta’s Economic Heritage Summer Tour to hear the story of how the Southern Tenant Farmers Union began. Think of 1934, the Great Depression, and how a diverse group of tenant farmers and sharecroppers came together to stand for what they believed in. You will also learn about the progression of cotton and farming over the years, see an original bank vault over 100 years old, and hear what educational opportunities are available for you and your students. You don’t want to miss this hidden gem of a museum!

Penny Toombs, Site Director, will give us a guided tour and share many great resources. Guest Speaker Dr. Tina Teague will discuss cotton sustainability and the current research that is being done at the Judd Hill Plantation. Terra Aquia, K12 Programs Coordinator at the Arkansas Center for Research in Economics at the University of Central Arkansas and Jeannette Bennett, Senior Economic Education Specialist from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will help us make the economic connections related to this historical treasure of the Arkansas Delta.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
